President, PM should work together - Malwatte Mahanayaka Thera

by Kandy North Special correspondent

The Most Ven. Rambukwelle Sri Vipassi Mahanayake Thera of the Malwatte Chapter said the President and the Prime Minister should join hands and work together to save the country from the present plight. "Unless they do so the affairs of state may grind to a halt plunging the country in to a worse abyss soon he said.

The Mahanayake Thera expressed these sentiments when Central Province Chief Minister Wasantha Aluvihare called on him at the Malwatte Vihare in Kandy on Thursday to seek his blessings before starting his official duties for the New Year.

Ven. Vipassi said the people of this country were confronting several grave problems today. The country was so dependent on foreign aid that it could not exist without it even for a week. Politicians should realise these things and act in a wise and intelligent manner.

Ven. Vipassi said wrong attitudes have cropped up in the minds of certain politicians due to wrong advise given by some of their close advisors. This had led to misunderstandings and unnecessary political confrontations obstructing peace and retarding the country's growth and development.

The Mahanayake Thera pointed out that unethical conversions had become one of the biggest problems in the Central Province today due to abject poverty among a majority of the rural population. He requested the Chief Minister to rectify this by launching a crash program to uplift the economic standards of the rural poor.

Chief Minister Wasantha Aluvihara said as this Provincial Minister of Buddha Sasana he hoped to launch a special program to protect and safeguard the Buddhist public especially in the rural areas.

After meeting the Mahanayake Thera the Chief Minister called on Central Province Governor Monty Goapllawa at his official residence and discussed development programs planned by the provincial council this year.

The Chief Minister was accompanied by Mrs. Vasanthi Aluvihare, Provincial Transport Authority Chairman Kithsiri Dissanayake and the Chief Minister's Co-ordinating Secretary J.B. Gangoda.
