CID searches Cricket Board Headquarters

by Sarath Malalasekera

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) probing allegations against Chairman Sri Lanka Telecom and President Sri Lanka Cricket Thilanga Sumathipala yesterday searched the Cricket Board Headquarters and unearthed evidence in connection with the investigations.

The CID team led by detective Senior SP Nimal Kulatunga searched the Cricket Board Headquarters on a warrant issued by Colombo Additional Magistrate L. Liyanarachchi.

Sumathipala had taken an undue interest in payments to Dambulla Cricket Stadium contractors. He is also alleged to have used Cricket Board funds to meet the lawyers' fees who appeared for his cases pending before Court, the CID told the Magistrate.

The Magistrate directed the Hatton National Bank to hand over all relevant documents to the CID in connection with number of transactions made by Sumathipala.

Court ordered Jeewaka Edirisinghe, Director of EAP Network, Kollupitiya to hand over the video tape of the 1999 World Cup Cricket tournament to the CID. Court also issued notice on Edirisinghe to appear before court on January 14.

The CID filed a comprehensive report to court on a complaint by Sumith Perera, President of the Baduruliya Cricket Club.

The CID report stated that Cricket Board funds had been used to send Dhammika Perera to England to witness the World Cricket Cup Finals in 1999 on a forged passport under the name of Buddhika Godage.

CID had recorded statements of Sarath Keerthi de Silva, Madavi A. Perera, Mohan Silva, Ajith Abeygunawardena and Anura Tennakoon all attached to the Cricket Board in connection with the investigations.

The Magistrate allowed a CID application to record a statement from Buddhika Priyasantha Godage, now in remand custody. Court directed the Welikada Prison Superintendent to allow a CID officer to record Godage's statement on Monday between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.

The Magistrate directed the Manager of the American Express Bank to hand over all relevant documents in connection with travellers cheques encashed by Godage.

The Magistrate also directed the CID to file a further report in connection with their investigations on January 14.
