Contempt of Court complaint against Minister by Nelka Medagedera and Ariyaratne Ganegoda The Supreme Court is due to make a ruling on a complaint of Contempt of Court filed against Agriculture and Livestock Minister S. B. Dissanayake. This follows an alleged statement made by Minister Dissanayake on the subject of the President seeking an opinion of the Supreme Court on the prevailing legal provisions in relation to her powers under Defence. The two Petitioners who wished to remain anonymous for security reasons have stated in their Petition to the Supreme Court that Minister S.B. Dissanayake, addressing a "Wap" ceremony at Habaraduwa recently made certain derogatory remarks about the Supreme Court that tantamount to Contempt of Court. They have forwarded a tape recording of the speech in question as an annexure to the Petition. According to legal circles, the Supreme Court will study the contents of the speech and make a ruling after the Court Vacation which is now in progress. Minister Dissanayake has once before been summoned to Court on a similar charge of Contempt of Court and has been warned and discharged on that occasion. |
