Kelani Perahera begins tomorrow The annual Kelaniya Duruthu Maha Perahera will be held from tomorrow to Tuesday. The perahera had its origins in 1927, largely due to efforts of Philanthropist Don Walter Wijewardane, son of Helena Wijewardane Lamathani. This religious cultural pageant has continued over the years as permanent feature as the country's most elaborate and grandeur low country pageant. Kelaniya Rajamaha Viharaya, the most sacred temple in the Western Province since Lord Buddha's sojourn during his third historic visit to Sri Lanka celebrates it annually in the Duruthu Poya by conducting a historic, traditional and cultural pageant. While the Kelani Perahera commemorates the religious significance of Lord Buddha's visit, it also supports and revives Sri Lanka's cultural traditions of drummers, dancers, singers, caparisoned elephants and colourful parades, which always made this event a night of all nights with colour. The Dayake Sabha under the patronage and direction of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe who is the President of the Dayaka Sabha has made elaborate arrangements to ensure the success of this pageant. |
