New dredger to do multi-tasking at Colombo Port The Port of Colombo purchased its brand new grab hopper dredger "Diya Kowulla" last week at a cost of Rs. 473 million. Twenty five percent of the cost was provided as a grant from ORET of the government of the Netherlands. The dredger was built by IHC Holland one of the world largest dredger builders for the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA). The "Diya Kowulla" is 45 metres in length, 12 metres in breadth and 3.5 metres in depth and has a 300 cubic metre hopper. It can dredge to a depth of 20 metres below water level and can achieve a speed of 9 knots with full load conditions. The crane has a hoisting capacity of 12 tons at 12.5 metre radius and can be used for mid stream lifts and construction works in addition to dredging. The new dredger will replace the old grab hopper dredger "Kakuluwa" built in 1965. Minister of Port Development and Shipping Rauff Hakeem, was the Chief Guest at the launching ceremony. Ranjith Maligaspe, Secretary to the Ministry of Port Development and Shipping, Chairman - SLPA, Dr. Parakrama Dissanayake, General Manager (Engineering), IHC Holland J Peter Koert, and other senior officials also participated at the ceremony. |
