CR & FC lament

Didacus De Almeida, fondly known as "Dida", passed away on December 29, 2003 from heart complications. A loyal CR member, Dida was in the company of a number of other CR stalwarts in his final hours proudly wearing his CR tie. Metaphorically speaking, Dida bled CR red and blue.

Dida burst on to the local club scene like a shooting star playing first for CR in 1962. He had represented St. Peter's with distinction before that. He was an instant success at CR, playing as a hard running centre three quarter and full back. Dida went on to play for the "Red Shirts" for an impressive 16 years thru 1978, captaining the Club in 1972. He also represented Sri Lanka many times, and had the distinction of playing in the 4th rugby Asiad held at Longdon Place in 1974.

Even after his lengthy playing days, Dida did not end his involvement with the CR. He was the President of the Club in 1983, the year in which the "Red Shirts" won the SLRFU and Sevens Trophies. Dida was also known to lend his musical talents to various CR occasions, singing and playing the guitar to entertain the crowd of the day.

In the latter days of his life, Dida was seen at the Club on numerous occasions and on one occasion, at a CR & FC rugby match against Havelocks at Longdon Place, told a few of us "Putha, the problem with these centers is that they don't run straight and hard Spoken like a true three quarter of yesteryear.

May his soul Rest in Peace
