Rajaratnam in Nurawa Eliya The question of Sri Lankan citizenship rights to the people of Indian origin and estate Tamils in particular have been resolved by an Act of Parliament with the consensus and support of all political parties in Parliament. This was a matter which should be thanked and appreciated by those beneficiaries said A. P. Kanapathipillai, a senior attorney-at-law, and a human rights activist addressing a seminar organised by Lawyers for Human Rights and held at Nuwara Eliya. Mr. Kanapathipillai, who traced the history of the Ceylon Citizenship Acts, relating to the people of Indian origin, which was promulgated by the late D. S. Senanayake and others with the support of certain Tamil leaders said when such moves were mooted even at the outset in the State Council, it was the only leader the late Dr. S. A. Wickremasinghe who strongly voiced against such impending moves by some chauvinists. But at the time the so called Tamil leaders were completely silent, he added. He told the audience that young men and women were not aware of it. He said it was a regrettable matter that certain trade unionists trying to capitalise on this issue. He called upon the plantation workers not to fall prey to such cheap moves. Bandara Bathanage, member of the Uva Provincial council said that the educated men and women in the plantation sector should be cautious on all issues affecting them, and they should not allow them to continue. |
