by Asanga Warnakulasuriya and Puttalam Group Correspondent Marawila Police yesterday arrested six members of the gang who robbed over Rs. 10 million from two persons near the Lunuoya bridge, Marawila on December 22. Police also seized Rs. 5.3 million of the loot. The six suspects were taken into custody from Tambuttegama which led to the recovery of the cash. A toy pistol was also seized from the suspects who were part of the nine-member gang who way laid the vehicle carrying the cash. Two of the suspects are army deserters, ASP S. W. Senaratne told the Daily News yesterday. It is also alleged that the four suspects had gone on a pilgrimage to Kataragama and had spent nearly Rs. 300,000 to Rs. 400,000 of the stolen money on an alms giving. Investigations had revealed that a businessman running a licensed foreign currency exchange centre in Chilaw had sent two employees to Colombo to exchange foreign currency sent by relatives living in Italy. Police said that the main suspect in the robbery is alleged to be a van driver who had been sent by the businessman to exchange the Euros. The employees who had converted the foreign currency into rupees were returning from Colombo when the suspects waylaid them. They had blocked the van, stolen the money and fled, Police said. Three suspects who are still missing are believed to have been given sanctuary by a leading Government politician. The suspects were taken in following a joint operation by the Crimes Division of the Police Headquarters, the Chilaw and Marawila Police. Under the directions of the SSP Jayantha Wickremaratne, Chilaw SSP Upali Ranasinghe and ASP S.W. Senaratne, and the Chilaw and Marawila HQIs are investigating. |
