by Tharika Goonathilake Tourist arrivals which was projected to reach the magical half a million mark this year is set to reach the much-awaited milestone sometime later today. The Tourist Board will extend a warm welcome and offer a host of other prizes including a week's holiday stay, to the lucky visitor who will help reach the 500,000 tally, the highest ever arrival figure in the country's tourism industry. "We are optimistic that we will reach the projected 500,000 arrival figure within the course of the day," Tourist Board Chairman Paddy Withana told the `Daily News' yesterday. According to the Chairman, the last arrival count, which was taken on Monday amounted to 498,000 visitors, 2000 short of the half a million arrival figure projected for 2003. The previous recorded peak in arrivals for Sri Lanka's tourism industry was 436,440 visitors in 1999, but this record too was surpassed last month, with the arrival of 442,920 tourists for the 11 months ending November. |
