KMTM lauds workers for productivity Kuruwita Manchester Textile Mills (KMTM) will recognize the commitment of its workers who volunteered to use the 5s system to improve the productivity of the company. The company will award its employees at the second quality circle convention and 10th anniversary of the company on January 7 at the Pannala town hall at 9am. Administration and Finance Manager Lal Fonseka said. KMTM, a textile dyeing and finishing plant coming under the umbrella of Brandix Lanka Ltd has been able to become highly successful due to continual improvement. Through continuous improvement, the business is making positive changes on a continual basis, which is called Kaizen. The Kaizen approach to quality management sees each production worker as an expert and each staff member is responsible for doing his job and finding ways to improve it. Team working is vital to the process of continuous improvement and employees meet in groups, quality circles with staff working in similar roles to put forward their ideas. Quality Circles meet together regularly to identify problems and recommend changes that could be implemented to improve the working process. In order for TQM and the Kaizen approach to be effective it is essential that staff be encouraged to take pride in their work. KMTM has been able to achieve the following milestones so far as a result: * Best 5S Implementation in the Manufacturing Large sector 2000 * Overall Kaizen Award in the year 2001 * National Productivity Award 2002 * Best Manager's Award 2003 for promoting Quality and Productivity (Awarded to Lal Fonseka) * National Safety Award 2003 in the North Western Province Two songs composed on Japanese 5S system will be released during the ceremony. |
