From the cradle to the grave

The Barefoot annual Christmas celebration and exhibition titled 'Nomad 2004' opened at the Barefoot Gallery, Colombo 3 on December 19 and continues till January 2,2004. The exhibition will feature creative use of fabric for man's journey through life.

Once a year Barefoot's designers (Shaunagh Aluvihare, Marie Gnanaraj, Preethi Hapuwatte, Jeremy Marjan and Senaka de Silva) have an opportunity to create a window of life. This year's exhibition is curated by Senaka and shows the creative use of fabric for man journey through life inspired by Barbara Sansoni the founder of Barefoot.

"Textiles are an essential part of man's culture. The importance of textiles as artistic, social and cultural expression cannot be over estimated. It is a living expression which has evolved with man as he developed and today is as popular as it has ever been".

"Textiles are essential components in our rites of passage through life - when you are born you are wrapped in cloth, your confirmation is in cloth and your wedding is in cloth. And when you die cloth accompanies you to the grave. Early man's first house was his dress. His tent was woven and his floor placed on sand or stone was woven.

One of the exhibits

We still use carpets - especially in the desert. Textiles are an integral part of life. Barefoot has made a significant contribution to textiles in this country - with its originality in colour, rectilinear composition and simplicity of form. Every hand-woven piece of fabric is special for its design as well as the underlying principle of providing employment which develop skills and avoid mass production for those who have few other opportunities - difficult to hold onto in this competitive developing global world.

Barefoot aims to make useful and beautiful things for living, using the best of creative talent, individual skills and non-mechanical and non-power driven crafts, using natural fibres, small cuts of wood and ecologically safe dyes.

These things whether they be a storage banner, a colour coded bag for colour pencils or jewelry, a travel bag or a sleeping mat help the modern nomad organise their life with beautiful functional objects. This exhibition celebrates all passages of life where textiles encompass the rich fabric of life. Enjoy, reflect, peruse and pass by on your nomadic journey through life.
