Media must play positive role in present issue - Dr. Jehan Perera by Uditha Kumarasinghe Media has also a key role to play and suggest ways in which the President and the Prime Minister must get together to find a solution to the political crisis, Dr.Jehan Perera, Director of the National Peace Council said. "If both the President and the Prime Minister are genuinely willing they can work out an agreement to settle the present crisis," he said at a seminar on 'The Present Political Crisis and the role of the media to safeguard the Peace Process' organised by the National Peace Council and the North South Journalists Association held at Savsiripaya, Colombo yesterday. Perera said the media should emphasise its view on the specific power sharing arrangements to be made between the President and the Prime Minister to end the political crisis and conduct the peace process. "Both sides are now uncertain due to the impasse in the peace process. In these circumstances, the LTTE has enough room to engage in various illegal activities. The LTTE will not wait two or three years until the southern political crisis ends." He said the PA's intention is to wait for the Provincial Council Elections scheduled to be held next year to exercise their power and the UNP position is to wait two years until the tenure of the President ends. "However the people want both leaders to get together to take forward the peace process. The self interests of the President and the Prime Minister will be very strong and play a key role in this crisis. There is a possibility of reaching a good outcome." Perera said the media has not yet reached the grass roots level to obtain the public's views on what they really think about the political crisis. "Even the State media has not addressed this issue so far." |
