Twenty trade unions, including the Sri Lanka Nidahas Sevaka Sangamaya, Jathika Sevaka Sangamaya and JVP are contemplating on a strike, sources said. Water Board Workers picketed on Thursday morning in front of its headquarters at Ratmalana demanding the authorities to review their salaries. Board's General Manager Mithra Wickremage said the workers had resorted to trade union action as they were unhappy about the 10 per cent salary increase offered in the budget. Admitting that the authorities have been informed of a strike by the trade unions, he said they were not aware of the dates. Wickremage said the Water Board's services were not affected by Thursday's picket. He said following their recent talks, the Treasury had agreed to grant the 10 per cent salary increase but the trade unions' protested against it. Wickremage said there are also other demands. He said Water Management and Irrigation Minister Gamini Jayawickrema Perera had agreed to meet most of the demands. |
