President's Colours for Navy unit

President's Colours will be awarded to the Sri Lanka Naval and Maritime Academy by President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga at the Colombo Light House at 5 pm today.

This is the first time that a Navy unit receives President's Colours. The Sri Lanka Naval and Maritime Academy was started in 1967 and it is the main training centre of the Sri Lanka Navy.

The academy consists of nautical, anti-submarine warfare, navigation, special boat squadron and gunnery schools is capable of training 1500 sailors at a time.

It was affiliated to Kelaniya University last year under Sec. 25 of University Act of 1978. The academy has received international recognition for its successful training capabilities for a large number of sailors and officers.
