Kanapathypillai yesterday evening when he was produced before him by Bribery and Corruption Commission officials under the Bribery Act. On an application by Rienzie Arsasacularatne, PC, Senior Counsel for Fernando, the Magistrate directed the Prisons authorities to produce the suspect before Colombo Chief Magistrate and Additional District Judge, A. A. R. Heiyanthuduwa on Monday, for further legal submissions. They had not submitted a certificate from the Commission to remand the suspect. Earlier, Heiyanthuduwa directed Immigration and Emigration Controller not to allow Fernando to leave the country until the completion of the investigations against him under the Bribery Act. Rienzie Arasacularatne PC with Asoka Weerasuriya, Chandima Fernando, Harin Gomes and Sanjeewa Edirisinghe appeared for Fernando. The Magistrate also directed the prison authorities to produce the suspect before a heart specialist when the defence counsel informed that his client was suffering from a heart ailment. |
