Neatly designed and informative - One More Day

Author: Deshabandu Edith M.G. Fernando: Commercial Printing Department The Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Ltd.

One More Day in itself is a catchy title for a book that compels the reader to have a quick look inside.

I had a quick look inside, out of curiosity of course, My first impression was that it is rather an unconventional book with no reference to any publisher or price. However, the book is neatly designed by Piyaratne Hewabatage of Heritage House (Pvt) Ltd.

The author's foreword titled "My thoughts" gives a hint to the contents of the book: "Successful living is a journey towards simplicity and a triumph over confusion. Many use the term "Spirituality" to describe the route for this journey. I cherish a spirituality of ecstasy. Like the prophets and mystics, they find their centre in God, in the all.

John Edward's Reflections on Sri Lankan Flags is one article that discusses all the aspects of the subjects. In fact, the author was instrumental in holding an exhibition of Sri Lankan flags. Mrs. Fernando is credited with maintaining a large collection of Sri Lankan flags. She had travelled widely calling on museums, temples, villages, and families looking for evidence for the country's vexillological history. She got the original flags photographed and replicas made by an artist.

As far as Sri Lanka's vexillological heritage is concerned, she is the successor to Edward Perera the first vexillographer and author of "Sinhalese Banners and standards.

Her earlier book "Lanka Flag: Unique Memorials of Heraldry" was well received by readers. Towards the end of the book comes another interesting article in Sinhalese flags written by the late E. W. Perera. It traces the origin and development of the flags down the ages.

One More Day comes with many colourful photographs and two maps that may be of interest to scholars of the country's history.

The quality printing and lay-out of the book make it a collector's item.- R.S.
