Colombo to host UNESCAP/APETIT conference on Tourism education

The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) will be organising the UNESCAP/APETIT Conference on Tourism Education and Training in the Asia-Pacific Region in Colombo, from December 11 to 14. The conference is being held in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Institute of Tourism and Hotel Management, Sri Lanka Tourist Board and the Sri Lanka Convention Bureau with financial assistance from the Government of Japan.

Within the framework of the UNESCAP/APETIT Conference, the third meeting of the General Council of the Network of Asia-Pacific Education and Training Institutes in Tourism (APETIT), the ninth meeting of the Executive Committee of APETIT and a Seminar on Tourism Education and Training in the Asia-Pacific Region will be organised by UNESCAP.

As a consequence of the rapid growth of tourism, the need to develop and train the required human resources in various segments of the tourism industry has been recognised as urgent. Closer cooperation among countries of the region is one way to effectively overcome some problems and constraints related to human resources development, since individual countries possess certain strengths and expertise that could be usefully shared with other countries. One important step is to strengthen institutional links among tourism training institutes in order to form the basis for exchanges of experience and information.

It was against this background that the Network of APETIT was established by UNESCAP in 1997. 163 tourism education/training institutes and national tourist organisations from 37 ESCAP member countries are participating in the activities of APETIT.

Their strong commitment to cooperation provide convincing proof of APETIT's importance and relevance for tourism development in Asia and the Pacific.

Hosting a Conference of this nature will enable Sri Lanka to benefit immensely in terms of Human Resource development in the hospitality industry.
