Benchmark achievement to encourage ICT sector:

Lanka excels at APICTA 2003

The benchmark achievement in the ICT sector in Sri Lanka has been identified as an icon to expand and encourage ICT industry here. In an encouraging move to further boost the ICT industry in the country, Sabre Technolgies (Pvt) Ltd and the University of Moratuwa won two prestigious awards at "The Asia Pacific ICT Awards, APICTA 2003 ) held in Bangkok, Thailand on Monday.

Sabre Technologies Pvt Ltd in Sri Lanka was recognized with a Merit Award for its research and development in Industrial Applications Category. The "SMART CAM" project of the University of Moratuwa has also bagged a Merit Award for its mastery over the "Tertiary Student Projects". APICTA provided a platform for innovators, entrepreneurs and companies in the ICT sectors in the Asia Pacific region to benchmark their products with each other.

Fourteen companies and 3 students from Sri Lanka competed at APICTA 2003. Forty Four ICT professionals represented Sri Lanka at event. The competition also gave an excellent networking opportunity for regional ICT players to meet and form strategic alliances to advance the industry together by showcasing the region's creativity and innovativeness in ICT."

The Deputy Prime Minster of Thailand, Suwit Khunkitts the Chief Guest on the occasion said that the Awards are a talent scout for innovation. Each member country features an ICT awards program to stimulate, recognise and showcase innovation, creativity and excellence in Information Communication Technology. Winners from each country then compete internationally. "The ultimate goal for the region is continue develop excellence in ICT and trade and that the Awards complement its strategy in stimulating economic developments, employment, innovation and an entrepreneurial culture" said Deputy Prime Minister Khunkitts.

Khunkitts said that the ICT industry has the potential to grow exceptionally in the Asia Pacifica Region with the encouragement and commitment given by the governments, organisations, and individuals" By cooperating and working together, the countries in the region can make this awards program a catalyst in the development of ICT industry in the Asia Pacific" he said.

Information and Communications Technology (ICT) is driving one of the most fundamental shifts in human society since the industrial revolution. It is infusing itself into very infrastructure, processes, services and products and is the key to enhancing productivity and realising new economic opportunities, especially for the Asia Pacific region.

The new evolving economy is driven by a knowledge-based culture facilitated by ICT. Such culture is devoid of borders and can be realised through networking across communities and countries. Networking will promote the sharing of knowledge which will contribute to narrowing the digital divide.
