Lankans k/o from Shield semis

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates, Friday - Sri Lanka were knocked out in the semi-finals of the Shield competition of the Dubai International Rugby Sevens when they lost to Zambia by 12 points (one goal, one try) to 17 (one goal, two tries) at the Dubai Exiles Rugby Grounds here yesterday.

The Zambians opened scoring in the second minute when Musonda Kaminsa scored an unconverted try by the corner flag. The Sri Lankans equalised two minutes later when winger Lakala Perera scored an unconverted try by the corner flag. Just before the breather the Zambians took the lead when Richard Kapoma dashed through 40 metres to touch down upper the posts. Noble Sinkala added the extra points to make it 12-5 at half time.

In the second minute after resumption Zambia's Richard Kapoma burst through to touch down under the posts to give Noble Sinkala an easy kick at goal to make it 17-5.

In the dying stages of the game, the Lankans reduced the deficit when Dilan Abeygunawardena crashed through for a try which was converted by Radhika Hettiarachchi to make it 17-12.

Sri Lanka were relegated to the Shield competition of the Dubai International Rugby Sevens when they suffered a humiliating 14-38 defeat at the hands of Debutantes Uganda in the Bowl Championship quarter-finals at the Dubai Exiles Rugby Grounds.

The Ugandans ran in six tries while the Lankans scored two tries. The Ugandans opened scoring in the fourth minute when Allan Musoke crashed through for an unconverted try. Two minutes later Sri Lanka snatched the lead when Amjad Buksh made a break and slipped out a pass to Pradeep Liyanage who scored by the corner flag. Amjad Buksh made a splendid conversion to make it 7-5. Just before the breather the Ugandans took the lead once again when Allan Musoke scored under the posts after a 30-metre run. John Musoke added the extra points to make it 12-7 at half time.

In the second minute after resumption Ugandas Roberts Seguya burst through to touch down under the posts. John Musoke converted. In the very next minute Robert Seguya fell over for an unconverted try to make it 24-7. Sri Lanka reduced the deficit when Amjad Buksh put the finishing touches to a move begun by Radhika Hettiarachchi by scoring under the posts. Buksh converted it himself.

The Ugandans increased their lead when Michael Wandera scampered through to score mid left. John Musoke converted to make it 31-14. Just before the final whistle Uganda's David Mufaka crashed through for a try under the posts to give John Musoke an easy kick at goal and Uganda ran out worthy winners by 38 points to 14.
