News Business Features Editorial Security Politics World Letters Sports Obituaries | President, PM meeting cordial by Manjula Fernando President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has reviewed the progress of the Tittawela-Samarawickrema committee at their meeting at the President's House yesterday. The one hour meeting between the President and the Prime Minister last afternoon ended without a conclusion, but the President has agreed to explore means for a more meaningful cohabitation arrangement considering the UNF stand against a national government as an immediate solution to the problem. The conciliatory proposals by the President was also taken up for discussion. "There was no breakthrough yesterday," sources told the Daily News yesterday. He said there will not be any official statement with regard to the yesterday's meeting from 4.30 pm to around 5.30 pm. It was the third meeting between the two since the take over of three ministries by the President. However, the talks between the duo had been cordial. At the conclusion the President and the Prime Minister agreed the Tittawela-Samarawickrema committee should continue their work to find a possible way out of the current situation before the set deadline, December 15. The committee is to continue their sittings next week. Government Cabinet Spokesman Prof. G.L. Peiris said on Thursday if the negotiations for a working relationship to continue cohabitation fails to find a settlement by December 15, the parties will have to resort to more practical means. The PA and the UNF have ruled out an election as a viable solution to the issue. The committee members were also present at the meeting. |
