Phakurdeen - Addalaichenai Group Corr A team of officials from the Human Rights Commission headed by its Chairperson Ms. Radheeka Coomaraswamy was in the Ampara District recently to obtain first hand information about the areas after the Government LTTE MoU. The team after completing their tour of the Batticaloa District visited the South Eastern University of Sri Lanka in Oluvil the Peace Secretariat in Akkaraipattu and NGOs' Consortium in Alayadivembu. At Oluvil Campus, Vice-Chancellor Dr. A. G. Hussain Ismail received Ms Kumaraswamy and her team and held discussions touching on all the areas, specially on human rights violations. Educationists, Deans, Lecturers, heads of various Departments who participated in the discussions aired their views and sought clarifications about various problems facing them. Thereafter, they visited the Akkaraippttu Peace Secretariat and met the members of the Peace Foundation from different communities. Human Rights Sub-Committee Members Dr. S. M. Jabbar (who is also the President of the Peace Foundation) and Nadarajah Dharmalinghai detailed their activities and the expectations of the Human Rights Commissions. Advisor to the Foundation A. Rouf Kariapper also took part in the discussions. The team also met the NGO's Consortium members in Alayadivembu and a few Representatives from other Social Services Movements. The Human Rights Commission team comprised Dr. Deepika Udagama, Mrs. C. C. Senanayake, N. Selvekumaran, Dr. M. A. Zainudeen and their Regional Co-Ordinator T. Manoharan (Kalmunai) and K. Bathel (Batticaloa). |
