Sancta Maria Montessori celebrates Golden Jubilee

Sancta Maria Montessori School, Wattala will be celebrating its Golden Jubilee this year. This educational institute was established in 1953 by its founder, Miss Theodora Jayalath, AMI having had the privilege of been trained under the very hands of Dr. Madame Maria Montessori herself and after a practical experience of 10 years under the pioneer of the Montessori Method in Ceylon, Miss Lena Wickramaratne. She managed this school efficiently for 48 years until her demise in March 2001 and was the guiding strength of the school.

The Montessori School originally started in 1953 with only four little children at Station Road, Hunupitiya, Wattala and then later shifted to Bishop's Road, Hunupitiya, Wattala. The growth of this little educational tree planted in a little corner of Wattala was in no way hampered by the insignificance of the location. Children began to flow in and soon the school sought better accommodation and with the help of then Parish Priest of St. Anne's Church, Wattala, late Rev. Fr. Nicholas Perera, the school was shifted in 1955 to the church premises, bordering the Negombo Road for the convenience of parents and the students. In 1958 an extension was made to the school by building a little hall to accommodate the 125 children who flocked to receive education.

After a being of 35 years at the church premises, she was able to shift the school in 1990 to her own premises at 258/1, Negombo Road, Wattala where the school is being conducted now.

This institute has done yeomen service to thousands of children, many of whom are professionals and academics holding high positions today as doctors, engineers, accountants, bankers. In the year 2002 the school created another extension by establishing a Day Care Centre to give better care for children of working parents. This Day Care Centre is open to babies of 2 years age and upwards from 7.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. on weekdays.

Since the inception more than 3,000 students have entered the gate of Sancta Maria Montessori, and many admitted during the 1950s and 1960s had the opportunity of studying up to grade 5 and even receiving their First Holy Communion at this school covering the religious education. All children associated themselves as true brothers and sisters of one great family and got individual attention in all three media of education, English, Sinhala and Tamil with no difference of caste or creed, language or status in life. They received cultural education with additional classes in Elocution, Drama, Art, Singing and Dancing.

The Golden Annual Grand Variety Entertainment of this school will be held on 7th of December, 2003 at 5.30 p.m. at the school hall to commemorate the 50th milestone of the school. The concert is a unique event as it had been held continuously for the past 50 years and is considered as the grand event in the school calendar.

To mark the Golden Jubilee of the school and its service to the society, the past pupils have joined hands to publish a 'Golden Jubilee Annual' a saga of the Sancta Maria Montessori School which is scheduled to be officially launched in April, 2004 on the school birthday. The committee invites all past pupils to join in this event and any inquiries on the project could be made by contacting the school on 2931907 or Mrs. Alaine Raymond, Past Pupil and Chairman of the Committee on 2686777.
