Visiting Victorians victorious

by Kandy sports correspondent

A last minute try which was goalled by the Victorian Schools Rugby Association helped them to defeat Trinity College, Kandy by 19 points (2 goals, 1 try) to 18 (1 goal, 1 try, 2 penalties) in their under-17 rugby match played at the Trinity College Rugby Stadium at Pallekelle. At half-time Trinitians led 13-12.

This game turned out to be an interesting affair with both teams indulging in some to class rugby. The Trinitians though outweighed by their bigger made opponents indulged in a run and pass game which prevented the Victorian team from using their hulk to bulldoze their way. This tactic by the Trinitians subjected them to tremendous pressure throughout the game and local team led 18-12 upto the very last minute when their opponents in a last ditch effort moved the ball brilliantly to score under the post. This was goalled and the Victorians won by the wafer thin margin of one point which will gave some indication of the closeness of the game.

The Victorian Schools played this match on their way to England and Ireland where they are scheduled to play a series of matches.
