Rohan wins Lectra Monthly Medal

Kandy Sports corr.

Rohan de Silva won the Lectra Monthly Medal for November 2003 with a nett score of 70 at the golf championship organised by the Victoria Golf and Country Resort and sponsored by Lectra Apparel Technologies and co-sponsored by Carlsberg and worked off at Victoria Golf Links at Rajawella.

It was good play by de Silva, a very good trier which brought him Victory on a day the course played tougher with the grass grown following heavy showers in the area. Former cricketer and planter now fully immersed in golf Tony Witham displayed that after a series of low scores that he is peaking by finishing first runner-up with 72 nett.

In fact Witham a very regular player at Victoria has been showing good form in his last two competition outings here, thereby throwing out a big threat to all in the competitions to follow. The second runner-up slot was claimed by Wycherly International schoolboy 13-year old Binupa Wijesinghe with 73 nett and if not for some careless play in the 15th hole, he could have well emerged winner.

The Men's Division two monthly medal was won by Indian Sahil Malhothra with a nett score of 74, Malhothra is another regular player at Victoria and he has improved leaps and bounds since of late. But his win of the November Monthly medal came after a count back as Ananda Manawadu too came up with a similar score of 74 nett and finished first runner up.

Veinert Holm ended up second runner-up with 75 nett. The race for the Men's Division II Lectra Grand Prix will be between Veinert Holm (468) and Ananda Manawadu (398) with six more rounds to go. Mike Emmot who was the race leader at one stage with 422 points has left the island throwing the championship wide open.

Binupa Wijesinghe won the junior championship with 73 nett bringing his tally to 785 points. A tense battle was expected between Binupa Wijesinghe and Sanjay Wettimuni but the latter failed to turn up due to examinations. Binupa Wijesinghe with his handicap brought down but still managed to play to par.

The Ladies Championship was won by Chathuri Engman with Ena Rasmussen as runner-up.
