Premier semis today

by Chris Dhambarage

The two semifinals of the Sri Lanka Cricket Premier League division one cricket tournament will be worked off this weekend with NCC taking on Bloomfield at the Colts CC grounds, Havelock Park and Colts CC meeting Galle CC at the NCC grounds, Maitland Place.

The clash between NCC and Bloomfield should turn out to be an interesting game even though both teams will be minus all their test players. However Bloomfield have obtained the permission from Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) to have the services of their key player Tillekeratne Dilshan for this important fixture.

Dilshan is undoubtedly Bloomfield's in form batsman having scored heavily in the past few outings including two centuries to his credit. The team will be captained by dashing opener Saman Jayantha in the absence of all rounder Kumara Dharmasena. But still Bloomfield will have some talented players in their ranks in the form of Dharshana Gamage, Indika de Saram, Shanuka Dissanayake and Udara Warna.

NCC who finished on top of the points table will be captained by test discard Russell Arnold. Apart from Arnold their batting will revolve around Pradeep Hewage and Prasad Padmasanka who is back in Sri Lanka after playing district cricket in Australia. The 27 year old former Anandian is in good form having made a century and a half century in the previous outing against Police SC.

The NCC bowling will be in the hands of former test cap Ravindra Pushpakumara, Akalanka Ganegama, Sanjeewa Weerasinghe and Susantha Pradeep.

Meanwhile Galle CC will be out to produce another giant killing performance when they take on Colts CC at the NCC grounds, Maitland Place. Galle CC finished as the runners up in their group and could be really satisfied with their performances. Despite fielding a young inexperienced team they have rallied around through their superb team effort to beat some of the more fancied teams in the preliminary round.

Galle CC will miss the services of paceman Lasith Malinga who is currently touring India with the Sri Lanka 'A' team. Nuwan Kulasekera who made his one day international debut for Sri Lanka against England at Dambulla will spearhead their bowling attack with Sujeewa Silva, Chanaka Komasaru and Anil Rideegammanagedera providing the back up support. Dhammika Sudarshana, Ruwan Galappathy and Duminda Wickremasinghe are their leading run scorers in the current season.

Colts CC too have got down the services of wicket keeper batsman Romesh Kaluwitharana for this key match and will be hoping to continue with their outstanding performances. The team is studded with a number of top all rounders with skipper Jeevantha Kulathunga, Sajith Fernando, Muthumudalige Pushpakumara, Dulip Liyanage and Eric Upashantha leading the way.
