In a letter addressed to the Prime Minister and copied to the President, Plantation Industries Minister and Leader of the Opposition, the union leaders have stated that Hantana Group managed by the JEDB comprises 7 divisions with a total extent of 853 hectares. The total workforce which was over 1300 about five years ago has now been reduced to 853. There are also about six hundred other employable people on the estate who are unemployed due to non-availability of work on the plantation. It is said a block of cultivated land in extent of 12.58 hectares from Hantana Top Division (total extent 46.18 hectares) is to be allocated to a Minister or one of his family members on request. Take over or allocation of any portion of cultivated land from Hantana group under whatever circumstance would only jeopardise the work availability of workers and the management of the estate as a viable unit. "Therefore, we on behalf of the workforce of Hantana Group request your honour (Prime Minister) to intervene in this matter immediately and prevent this action in the interests of the workers" the union leaders have said in their letter. |
