Schools should allocate more periods for religion - Nayaka Thera

Bingiriya group correspondent

It is very sad to note that the present school curriculum doesn't give much considerations to religious education and our schools have allocated only two periods per week in the timetable for religion. This is not adequate to mould the character of the younger generation to become useful citizens of the future. Since we witness that the waves of crimes in the country are ever increasing, the parents and Government authorities should create more opportunities for children to understand their religions so that these children with tender hearts will absorb meaningful and optimistic views of life. Then their practical lives will be fruitful in every respect," said Venerable Dunkannawe Vineetha Nayaka Thera, Chief Advisor of Daham schools in the Kurunegala district.

He was addressing a conference of Daham school teachers and Daham school students of the Bingiriya electorate, held recently at Bingiriya National school.

The Nayaka Thera said that it had been found that most of the teachers who teach Buddhism do not have practical knowledge in Buddhist meditation methods. Most of the Buddhist monks in the country seem to be lacking the knowledge of the Pali laugnage which was the lord Buddha's original language. scholars who are well-versed in Pali are very rare in the society today.

Buddhists should not allow this noble language to disappear in the years to come, the Thera said.

Dedicated Buddhists of this country should preserve Buddhist heritage for future generations and Buddha's teachings for the whole human race. Those teachings cannot be confined to any particular community. All wise people in the world are ever grateful to the Buddha whose compassion and loving-kindness to all beings of the universe had no bounds, the Thera concluded.

W.E. Jayathilake, Divisional Secretary of Bingiriya also spoke.
