Dambulla town to be upgraded

Kandy South Group Correspondent

A sum of Rs. 90 million will be spent in the development projects in Dambulla town, said Minister of Central Region Development Tissa Attanayake when he addressed officials of the Urban Development and Low Cost Public Utilities and Housing at the auditorium of the Central Region Ministry at Gatembe in Kandy.

Minister Tissa Attanayake said that a sum of Rs. 77 million has been allocated for the construction of a new bus stand for Dambulla and separate halts will be constructed for different destinations to avoid confusion. Forty trade stalls in the top floor of this bus stand complex will also be constructed for the convenience of the public. About 40 per cent of this work has been already completed and this project is expected to be completed on time.

The Minister said that daily large number of local and foreign tourists visit the historic city of Dambulla and the Regional Economic Centre is now kept open 24 hours for the convenience of traders from other parts of the island. For their convenience a sum of Rs. 2.4 million will be spent in the provision of the necessary facilities. A further sum of Rs. 4 million will be spent for the construction of toilets and providing a gully unit near the new bus stand.

Drains will be constructed on either side of the main road within the Dambulla Pradeshiya Sabha limits and side-walks for the pedestrians too will be constructed. Machinery valued at Rs. 5 million will be provided for the maintenance of roads through the Asian Development Bank.

There should be proper management of funds granted for development by foreign countries. These funds should be used properly and optimum benefits must be obtained, the Minister added.

Also present on the occasion were Secretary to the Ministry of CRD Palitha Elkaduwa and its advisor Palitha Randeniya, Director, Urban Development Authority Mrs. Janaki Hettiarachchi and other officials.
