Model in Police hands

by Asanga Warnakulasuriya

A leading female fashion model alleged to be the mastermind behind a massive credit card fraud running to over Rs 1.5 million was taken into custody by the Kandy DIG's Special Investigations Unit (SIU).

The model along with her husband were taken into custody on Wednesday in connection with a credit card fraud where the card's owner is said to be a 19-year-old son of a millionaire businessman.

The couple had stolen the boy's credit card and the national identity card at a farewell party at the businessman's house. The family had earlier decided to send their son abroad for higher studies, Police said.

It was also revealed that the couple had made use of two other persons to withdraw Rs. 725,000 on three separate occasions from the credit card branch in Kurunegala. They have also taken Rs. 800,000 from the Bambalapitiya branch.

The couple had used the money to open a beauty saloon and purchase cosmetics, garments and other items, Police said.
