by Bharatha Malawaraarachchi The Health Sector Trade Union Alliance (HSTUA) yesterday suspended its strike action following an assurance given by Health Minister P. Dayaratne that its demands would be addressed at the next Government Cabinet meeting on December 10. "The Minister promised us a written assurance that the question of our salary anomalies would be taken up at the next Cabinet meeting," an HSTUA spokesman told the Daily News adding that their Union decided to table this letter at today's Ex-Co meeting before contemplating the next move. Meanwhile, HSTUA called off their daily four-hour walkout from 8 a.m. to 12 noon and also a wide scale Trade Union campaign fixed for December 9 - the eve of the next Cabinet meeting. A Cabinet decision in this regard was to be taken in the first week of November but was repeatedly pushed back due to no regular Cabinet meeting following the political developments at the time. The Health Ministry repeatedly took up position that the matter was now out of its hands since the proposals and the Treasury's recommendations had been forwarded to Cabinet. The two-day temporary work stoppage barring the Lady Ridgeway Children's Hospital and Maharagama Cancer Hospital partially paralysed health sector causing severe hardship to patients. The Government Medical Officers' Association and the Public Services Nurses' Union did not join in the Trade Union action. Earlier, the HSTUA gave notice of its campaign if the authorities failed to provide a swift solution to their salary anomalies. "We have done our part. The Cabinet Sub Committee will now evaluate those proposals before taking any decision," a Health Ministry spokesman said. |
