Negotiations to re-open Kabool Lanka

Industries Minister Rohitha Bogollagama is negotiating with an Israel investor to re-open the Kabool Lanka factory in Thulhiriya.

This factory was closed for nearly one year since the foreign management who was running it had abandoned it. There are over 3200 employees and they have not been paid for along time. The Minister said that an Israel investor is keen on opening a Denim fabric manufacturing plant at the 22-acre complex.

"However the equipment used at the factory is not suitable for the investors new project and this has caused the delay," he said. The Minister said that he objected to the Korean management taking over the factory in 1997 since he felt even at that time that it was not a feasible investment.

"With the taking over of this factory fabric manufacturing plants in Sri Lanka were faced with severe hardships since the then government granted Kabool Lanka the import of duty free fabrics," he said.

He said that manufacture of local fabrics has now become a major problem and he is taking a personal interest to settle this dispute. (SS)
