Bringing ICT to grassroots, a challenge

'Cohesive strategy vital to create digital country'

Bringing ICT to grassroots level while making it relevant to the mass people base is a challenge for the government, ICT professionals and academia. A cohesive strategy within all sectors on ICT is vital to achieve this goal said Minister of Economic Reforms, Science and Technology Milinda Moragoda at the inauguration of 5th International Information Technology Conference (IITC 2003)at BMICH on Tuesday.

The conference "Towards an ICT enabled Society" was attended by foreign ICT experts to share the knowledge and experiences in creating Sri Lanka a a digitally advanced country to achieve speedy economic growth.

"The ICT agency created to push through e-Sri Lanka initiative will give leadership to help fulfill the country's aspirations of utilising ICT for economic and social growth" Minister Moragoda said. He also commended academics for initiating advances in cutting edge techno progress in ICT.

Prof. V.K. Samaranayake, Director University of Colombo School of Computing (UCSC) said that the conference would contribute immensely for capacity building to utilize ICT for sustainable economic growth. He also outlined details of the conference and the benefits the county's ICT professionals would gained through the conference.

Prof. Samaranayake also commended collaboration extended by industry and the academia.

Sir, Arthur C. Clarke who was the Guest of Honour said that man is the supreme machine in the world who has the thinking capacity.

Electronic Government, or "E-Government," is one of the main topics in the field of ICT. E-government is designed to make better use of information technology (IT) investments to eliminate wasteful government spending, reduce government's paperwork burden on citizens and businesses, and improve government response time to citizens - from months down to minutes, Keio University, Japan Prof. Takefuji said. "A key goal of successful e-government is for citizens to be able to access government services and information within three "clicks," when using the Internet. Prof. Takefuji said.

Good e-learning promotes communication and makes collaborative problem solving possible at any time and any place in an organization. Dr. Johan Torbiornsson of Stockholm University, Sweden said

With proliferation of low cost-high speed Ethernet technology, it has now become possible to implement efficient campus networks, both small scale and large scale. In this tutorial we will look at the switched Ethernet technology and the IP technology, the steps to take from planning stage to the implementation stage of such networks and wireless local area technologies, and last mile options.

potential solutions in important research areas of ICT such as Infrastructure for e-society, Local language technology Computational intelligence, Visual computing, High performance and cluster computing, Information system security, privacy and legal issues, Mobile computing, Digital government, Data mining and warehousing, Technology management, Societal applications of ICT, Electronic commerce and business applications, Technology enhanced learning Bio-informatics and health information systems, Accessibility for the disabled.
