EU to enhance aviation training in Sri Lanka

The newly established Civil Aviation Authority of Sri Lanka through "Civil Aviation Authority Training Academy" (CAATA) under "EU-South Asia Civil Aviation Co-operation Project" will receive facilities from the European Union (EU)to train aviation officers required for Sri Lanka.

This program is a part of European Union's newly launched training program for the 14 countries in the Asian region at a cost of Euro 30 million from last September.

This move is to boost the civil aviation industry in Sri Lanka. Under this program, countries in the Asia would be divided into two groups "South-Asia" and "South-East-Asia". The training programs would also be conducted under the title of "EU-South Asia Civil Aviation Co-operation Project" for the aviation personnel in the respective countries in collaboration with EU's technical partner "European Association of Aerospace Industries" (AECMA) who is responsible for the execution of the program.

All SAARC countries except India will join the training program conducted under "South-Asia" Group. Eu-South Asia Project Office would be located in Colombo and more than 70% of the training courses would be conducted in Sri Lanka while the balance training courses would be conducted in the other member countries in the South Asia.

(CAATA) set up to cater to all civil aviation training requirements in the country is established at the ground floor of the "Sirimavo Bandaranaike Hotel Management School" Colombo 03. The institution is equipped with two training classrooms with the state-of-the-art training equipment and has a capacity of holding 20 and 30 persons respectively. Out of all modes of transports in the globe, air transport has become the most expeditious yet the safest mode of transport available to humankind today. "Training" both initial and recurrent has played a prominent role in achieving this very high level of performance in the air transport sector.

Sri Lanka being an island is compelled to depend largely on the air transport sector, to meet its present and future needs for communication and transportation with the rest of the world. Hence systematic approach for the development of civil aviation infrastructure in the country is very vital. Providing proper infrastructure facilities for systematic and structured training in the field of civil aviation take a prominent place in this exercise. None of our universities or tertiary education centers in the country produces professionals required by the aviation industry. The newly established Civil Aviation Authority of Sri Lanka (CAA) has identified this void to be one of the serious deficiencies for the fast development of aviation sector in this country and taken immediate steps to establish a "Civil Aviation Authority Training Academy" (CAATA) to cater to all civil aviation training requirements in the country.

The institution will also conduct short training courses initially on selected topics covering safety, technical, operational, commercial, legal matters relating to civil aviation. Each course would be well structured and standardised to achieve the required level of competency in the subject area and conducted by highly qualified instructors who hold requisite approvals by the Director General of Civil Aviation. The Civil Aviation Authority of Sri Lanka will issue certificates to each participant who would successfully complete the approved course of training.
