Sixty three Indian fishermen arrested The Navy on Tuesday night arrested 63 Indian fishermen aboard 13 fishing trawlers poaching in the Sri Lankan waters off Kayts, Jaffna. The Navy personnel recovered 43 fishing nets, 11 empty Diesel cans, 120 litres of diesel, one cassette recorder with speakers, eight Kerosene burners, two aluminium buckets, four Batteries (100 AMP) and fish and several other items from those vessels, Military spokesman Colonel Sumeda Perera said. In another incident, Naval personnel on patrol on the Kayts islands arrested 14 Indian fishermen. They were detained by the Navy for questioning. The incident was reported to the Kayts Police. The arrest came only a day after the LTTE released 32 Indian fishermen captured over the weekend by the Sea Tigers in the seas off Mannar. The fishermen were later released following the intervention of the Scandinavian truce monitors. |
