No joint operations

The Presidential Secretariat and Defence Ministry attention has been drawn to media reports indicating that the Security Forces and the LTTE have begun joint operations against perpetrators of violence committed against Tamil and Muslim civilians in Trincomalee.

These reports are incorrect. Neither party has agreed to conduct joint operations, the Presidential Secretariat said in a media release yesterday.

Referring to a statement issued by the Defence Ministry on Tuesday, the Presidential Secretariat clarified that what the said statement mentioned was that the Security Forces and the LTTE agreed to identify the perpetrators of such violence.

It does not mean that the two parties are engaged in joint operations, the statement added.

Both parties have agreed to work in accordance with the instructions of the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission.

These decisions were reached at a meeting at Alankarnihi, the Presidential Secretariat stated.
