Kinniya: All parties eager to restore peace by Our Trincomalee Corr. The Security Forces, Police, LTTE and local community leaders have agreed to work together to restore security in the Eastern town of Kinniya rocked by a series of murders in the past week. At a meeting held at the local SLMM office on Monday all parties agreed for an unified effort to ease tensions in the town. Trincomalee SSP Upali Hewage said an unknown force is involved in violence. "In certain cases are there are no witnesses at all. LTTE support to identify the culprits is vital," he said. He stressed that the two weeks of violence cannot be brought under control alone by the police and Army. The LTTE and local peace committees should cooperate. He said food rations have been sent to the displaced people in the village of Alarkenai. The LTTE representatives assured that they would work hard to restore peace in the area. They stressed that they have no hand in the disturbances adding that the security forces should probe into the recent incidents. "The third force behind these violence is beyond our control," LTTE representative Dharman said. He said the LTTE Trincomalee leader Paduman has been directed to probe into the recent events to find out the third party involved in violence. SLMM Trincomalee district acting deputy chief Kurt Spur stressed the importance of a coordinated effort by police, Army, LTTE and local peace committees to arrest violence. In another development, special peace committees comprising local Tamil and Muslim leaders have been set up at Alenkerni, Kinniya. Major General Sunil Thennakone, Police officers and LTTE area leaders were also present at the occasion. Earlier SSP Hewage addressing the local community leaders stressed that the tensions should be brought under control through dialogue not by use of force. |
