"I have always acted in an impartial manner. While safeguarding the dignity and decorum of Parliament," the Speaker said. He also urged the members to refrain from making disturbances. "The Members of Parliament should be allowed to air their views and problems of the public. It is a duty of MPs," said. The Speaker's remarks came after a statement made by PA MP Mahinda Amaraweera who tendered an apology to the Speaker over his behaviour during the adjournment motion debate on Tuesday. Amaraweera said he never intended or acted to cause any embarrassment or disrepute to the Speaker at the tail-end of the adjournment motion. "I only wanted to raise a Point of Order and I did not want to embarrass you," he said. The Speaker said he had always given an opportunity for any member to raise a Point of Order. "It is very difficult for me to control the situation when everyone is raising Point of Orders. If one member raises a Point of Order at a time, I can give him the opportunity to continue, he" said. |
