Land dispute leads to mob attack by Asanga Warnakulasuriya Tension ran high yesterday in Payagala town after a woman and her son were chopped with a sword by a businessman over a land dispute. Following the incident an angry mob had destroyed a shop in Maggona belonging to the businessman, Payagala Police said. The mother and son who were admitted to the Nagoda Hospital is said to be in a critical condition. The Payagala Police OIC IP C.W. Wickremasekara told the Daily News yesterday that the two families living in the same block of land had been arguing for the ownership of the land for sometime. Payagala Police yesterday had ordered the two parties to report to the Police at 9.00 am in order to settle the dispute, OIC said. Investigations had revealed that the mother and her 30-year-old son on their way to Payagala Police had gone to the businessman's shop in Maggona and had threatened the businessman. While the duo was waiting at the bus halt a short distance away from the shop, the businessman with three others had come to the spot and attacked them with a sword, OIC said. An angry mob had later went on rampage and had damaged the shop and equipment worth several thousands of rupees, OIC added. Payagala Police had taken three suspects including the businessman into custody while another suspect had fled following the incident. Payagala Police had sent a special Police team to Beruwela in search of the missing suspect. Five suspects alleged to be members of the mob were also taken into custody. The situation was brought under control with security being beefed up in Payagala with additional Policemen, OIC said. |
