Sri Lanka National Dialogue on dams and development The "Sri Lanka National Dialogue on Dams and Development" will take place on December 5 and 6 at the Centre for Housing Planning and Building, Pelawatte. It is organised jointly by the Ministry of Irrigation and Waste Management, Network of Women Water Professionals (NetWwater) and the Interim National Water Resources Authority. Minister of Irrigation and Water Management Gamini Jayewickrema Perera will be the guest of honour. This effort is being supported by the Dams and Development Project of the United Nations Environmental Programme UNEP). The Dialogue will present four case studies on proposed dams at Kotmale, Weheragala, Deduru Oya and Moragahakanda. The sessions will include a Stakeholder panel discussion, present alternate opinions and also a presentation of DDP's Strategic Priorities. Dr. Eng. Khin Ni Ni Thein, Senior Advisor UNEP - Dams and Development Project will be making a special presentation and sharing the DDP-UNEP's global experiences in this field. This activity is the first in a series planned for extending the stakeholder participation in the planning dams and development. A draft of a Sinhala translation of the World Commission of Dams report by NetWwater will be presented for comments, with an intention to make the related issues more widely to the Sri Lankan stakeholders. |
