Petition against Minister

by Wasantha Ramanayake

A petition has been sent to the Supreme Court seeking a determination whether or not a statement made by Agriculture, Livestock and Samurdhi Minister S. B. Dissanayake amounted to contempt of the Supreme Court.

The petitioner who remained anonymous, stated in his petition that the Minister had made certain adverse remarks in connection with the Supreme Court decision on a reference made to the Court by the President to determine the constitutionality of the Gazette Notification that sought to vest the power to retire the Commissioned officers of three Armed Forces in the Defence Ministry.

The petitioner alleged that the Minister had made the remarks at a Vap Magul Festival in Habaraduwa on November 3.

He prayed to the Supreme Court to inquire into the comments made by the Minister and take suitable action.
