The Presidential Commission of Inquiring on Matters Relating to the Maintenance of Law and Order commenced hearing yesterday at the BMICH. Here are two of Sri Lanka’s most distinguished citizens Dr. Arthur C. Clarke and Dr. P.R. Anthonis who were present to give evidence. The commissioners are retired Supreme Court Judge S.W.B. Speaker has no powers to bind President's powers - Opposition Leader

Making a statement in the House at the beginning of yesterday's proceedings Leader of the Opposition Mahinda Rajapakse, MP yesterday told Parliament that the Speaker has no power or jurisdiction to make any ruling or pronouncement that seeks to bind the plenitude of powers vested in the President of the Republic under the present Constitution unless expressly conferred thereunder.

Govt willing to forge MoU with President

The Government expressed yesterday that it was willing to go for a 'Memorandum of Understanding' with the President on "issues of utmost national interest" such as economic policies and the peace process in order to clear the present political uncertainty in the country.

Treasury withholds Rs. 65.1m due to RVSA

The Treasury has not sent to the Ranaviru Seva Authority a sum of Rs. 65.1 million being proceeds from the sale of the Jayaviru Sampatha lottery, for the period January 1 to August 31, 2003. Jayaviru Sampatha lottery was launched in June 2002 mainly as a fund raiser to the housing and welfare projects of the Authority.
