News Business Features Editorial Security Politics World Letters Sports Obituaries | Be alert, says MEP Avissawella Group Correspondent The President is neither obstinate nor has she objected to the peace process as the UNF Government alleged but she has used executive powers in the hour of need to protect the country's sovereignty, MEP leader Dinesh Gunawardena, MP said. He was addressing a meeting organised by the MEP to protest against the division of the country and to educate people on the present political situation at Avissawella recently. Gunawardena said that Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, as a powerful Minister of the J. R. Jayewardene government voted for the present constitution and he is thus responsible for the powers vested on the President under the constitution. Such powers cannot be reduced when a person of a party other than UNP is elected as the President. President Kumaratunga as the head of state has acted in the interest of all citizens so the Premier's challenge to such powers at this juncture is ridiculous, he said. He said that the President has clearly explained the reasons to take over three ministries and anybody hails democratic freedom would approve such decision as these three ministers did not perform their duties for the interest of the people and the country. Gunawardena said that the Government paid no heed towards the LTTE activities which led to violation of the MoU between the two factions thus letting the LTTE to achieve their goal of a separate state. He warned people to be alert at this decisive juncture and act responsibly to protect the country from all extremist and separatist forces. |
