New principal for Trinity Roderick L. Gilbert has been selected the new Principal of Trinity College, Kandy by the School's Board of Governors. He succeeds Dr. W. R. Breckenridge, who will be retiring at the end of this year. The appointment is effective from January 1, 2004. Gilbert, 58, holds a B.Ed. (English and Education) degree from the University of London UK, postgraduate qualifications in English as a Foreign Language from the University of Lancaster UK and a Diploma in Cross Cultural Religious Education from the All Nations Christian College, UK. Gilbert, an Englishman has wide experience in the profession as teacher, principal and administrator in environments similar to Trinity. Most of his career has been in India and in South Asia, the last assignment being the principal of Hebron International School, Ooctacamund for over eight years. He is the Regional Secretary of the South Asia Scripture Union International, covering Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. Gilbert is married. Gilbert will be the 17th principal of Trinity College, Kandy. SLBC Tamil National Service covers Jaffna The Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC) will restart airing its Tamil National Service on Medium Wave 855 Khz frequency ensuring a better service to the residents in the Northern Peninsula from today, SLBC Chairman Hudson Samarasinghe said. Call for Hospital Committee to perform actively Rehabilitation, Resettlement and Refugee Affairs Minister Dr. Jayalath Jayawardane said the newly appointed Hospital Committee if actively performed its duty would help Ragama Teaching Hospital to achieve excellence. Speaking at the establishment of the Hospital Committee of the Ragama Teaching General Hospital at the hospital, Dr. Jayawardane said though the hospital was one of the leading hospitals in the country, there were some shortcomings. The Hospital Committee will be able to fulfil the shortcomings, the Minister said. He said there were 46 specialist medical officers, 1,400 bed strength in 32 wards and treated around 1,200 outdoor patients daily. Feed the poor project The All Ceylon Young Men's Muslim Association (YMMA) Conference has launched the feed the poor project. Under this program, 4000 families were distributed dry rations through 20 affiliated branches through out the island. The Conference also organised Ifthar/Sahar programmes in Negombo, Mutwal, Kandy, Akkaraipattu and Thotawatte Panadura. Assistance has also been extended to Girls and Boys Orphanages in Colombo, Negombo and Kalutara Prisons, Arabic College Kattukele and Refugee Camps in Puttlam. The YMMA Conference in collaboration with the World Islamic Call Society has distributed dry rations to 500 families at their National Headquarters in Colombo and conducted an Ifthar programme at Mutwal and Akbar Town for over 1000 people. Children's Film Festival in Kandy A children's film titled Malli in Tamil with English sub-titles will be screened at the Auditorium of the Assistant High Commission of India, 31, Rajapihilla Mawatha, Kandy today at 10.30 a.m. The screening of this film is part of the Children's Film Festival being organized by the Assistant High Commission of India, Kandy under the auspices of the Bhartiya Kala Kendra from November 14 to 21. |
