The Free Media Movement (FMM), in a news release issued yesterday, said the discovery of a primed hand grenade inside the Sirasa TV premises could be an attempt at intimidating the private media. FMM's Sunanda Deshapriya said the grenade was found at a time when Sirasa TV had obtained rights to cover the Parliamentary proceedings live on Wednesday. Thus it could be an attempt to intimidate journalists working there. The FMM expressed the hope that several statements made by the President criticising the conduct of the media would not encourage forces hostile to the media, pointing that both the media and politicians have the right to criticise each other. But these should not lead to mutual hatred between the two parties. The FMM appealed to all political forces not to attempt to subjugate the media by acts of violence. |
