First ever Chemical Education Conference

The College of Chemical Sciences of the Institute of Chemistry, Ceylon has announced the holding, for the first time ever, a Sri Lankan conference in the area of Chemical Education on April 29 and 30 at Hotel Trans Asia. This Conference on the theme "Chemical Education for National Development" is being held to commemorate the twenty-fifth anniversary of the commencement and successful conduct of a professional Graduateship Program in Chemistry in Sri Lanka.

The widest participation of scientists, chemists, educationists educational administrators, researchers, industrialists, educational planners and policy makers, curriculum developers etc is expected at this Conference. Prof. J.N. Oleap Fernando, Dean of the College of Chemical Sciences states in a news release that it is hoped at the Conference, inter alia to discuss mechanisms to upgrade and broad-base Chemical Education in Sri Lanka with a view to making it an integral part of education for the next generation.

It is also hoped to identify methods, mechanisms, instructional materials and innovative curricula necessary to make Chemical Education increasingly relevant and meaningful to national developmental needs in the context of environmental, industrial, agricultural and biological concerns.

The Conference objectives will be dealt with under several sub themes including secondary education and teacher training, tertiary education and success skills development, post-graduate education and professional development, chemical education and sustainable development and innovations for national development.

A half-day symposium on "Industry-Chemistry Interaction" with objectives, of promoting interaction and collaboration with industry and identifying industry expectations on the role of chemistry graduates will be held as a part of the conference.

The organising committee invites abstracts of papers to be presented at the Conference from all those interested in participating at this unique event.
