NIIT launches higher education centre in Jaffna

NIIT, a leader of IT Education and Training launched its 8th branch in Jaffna recently. Prof. S. Mohanadas, Vice Chancellor of University of Jaffna was the chief guest at the launching ceremony where over 150 people participated. The distinguished gathering included school principals, managers of commercial banks in Jaffna, representatives from various students associations in Jaffna, parents, teachers and several distinguished personnel from the academic sector in Jaffna.

Prof. Mohanadas commended for opening a branch of NIIT in Jaffna.

The branch will create avenues for quality higher eduction to the large student base in Jaffna who were not able to enter into the normal university education system, he said. Sunimal Weerasooriya, Managing Director of MMBL CyberSkills (Pvt) Ltd. licensee of NIIT in Sri Lanka, outlined NIIT's unique teaching methodology, curriculum development capabilities and the International University Alliances of NIIT to the large gathering present. He said that due to the lack of awareness of this new IT Sector, lot of students make wrong decisions and choices when it comes to education and to avoid this situation every NIIT branch has a student counsellor, who would recommend suitable courses to students based on their educational background, career aspirations and financial capabilities. Jaffna students are privileged to get the services of an Indian lecturer from NIIT India at the Jaffna branch, Weerasooriya said.

The Jaffna branch of NIIT was opened with the collabroation of Uthayan IT Island. This centre is a full-fledged NIIT branch offering courses up to a 2-year Diploma leading to IT degrees in 10 universities in Australia, UK, USA, Ireland, New Zealand and Canada. The NIIT students are eligible for exemptions ranging from 1 year to 2 years at these Universities, upon successful completion of NIIT's DNIIT program.

NIIT has nearly 3,000 education centres across 27 countries and was ranked as Asia's No. 1 training company in 2002 by the International Data Corporation. NIIT currently operates 8 branches in Sri Lanka in the locations of Union Place, Bambalapitiya, Nugegoda, Kandy, Kurunegala, Gampaha, Trincomalee and Jaffna.
