Defence Services Sports Festival from November 26 to 28

The Sports festival and Colours Awarding Ceremony 2003 organised by the Defence Service Sports Board (DSSB) will be held from November 26 to 28 at the Sugathadasa Stadium, Colombo. Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Johnston Fernando will be the chief guest at the opening ceremony and Chief of Staff Security Forces General Lionel Balagalla will be the chief guest at the Colours Awarding Ceremony.

Thousands of players will participate in various games. Hockey and cricket have been already completed while the finals of the basketball will be held at the Army Headquarters.

The sportsmeet's aim is to award colours to 450 players comprising members of the Security Forces participating in 32 games and appreciate their sports skills. Two sportswomen participating in boxing and four sportsmen participating in Sky Diving will be awarded colours for the first time at the ceremony.

Sky diving, gymnastics and a band show will be displayed at the ceremony. The public are invited to be present.

A musical show and finals of the boxing will be held at the award ceremony. DSSB President Air Marshal G.D. Perera, Chairman of the Organising Committee, Air Vice Marshal O.D.N.L. Perera, Member of the Governing Body, Major General H.M.N. Krishnarathne, Member of the Governing Body, Rear Admiral S.P. Weerasekara, ASO Army , Colonel S.M.A.W.B. Padeniya, Secretary NSB, Commodore D.W.A.S. Dissanayake and Secretary AFSC/DSSB, Wing Commander K.V.N.J. Dharmadasa are organising the event.

A cycle race and soccer finals will be the outdoor games and judo, karate and wrestling preliminaries, volleyball finals and badminton at the Badminton Courts will be the indoor games at the Opening ceremony on November 26.

Athletics, rugger finals, badminton finals and cycle race finals will be the outdoor games while judo, karate, wrestling finals and boxing semi finals will be the indoor games to be held on November 27. The boxing finals and musical show will be held at the award ceremony on November 28.
