Atapattu praises new fast bowlers

by Chris Dhambarage

Sri Lankan captain Marvan Atapattu praised his new pair of fast bowlers and warned his team of an England fight back in the second day night one day international at the R. Premadasa Stadium on Friday.

Atapattu speaking after his team had thrashed England by ten wickets in the first ever day night one day international at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium, commended the performances of the newcomers Dinusha Fernando and Nuwan Kulasekera.

Sebastianite SC paceman Fernando and Galle CC's all rounder Kulasekera made a dream debut for Sri Lanka where they combined well to bundle out the visitors for their second lowest total in one day international cricket.

Atapattu said that their bold decision to include two new faces in a crunch game of this nature have brought great results at the end. Kulasekera would have anyway made up the final eleven because Sri Lanka had decided to include three pacies with the conditions favouring the bowlers.

Atapattu said that he had seen both these players make vast strides in the past few months and their performances at the nets were really encouraging.

Atapattu added that he was somewhat disappointed for losing the important toss but later on did not have any regrets over the matter. England were hoping to continue from where they left in Bangladesh but the Lankans turned things around to take a psychological advantage ahead of the last two games in Colombo.

Atapattu said that his plan was to attack the Englishmen from one end through Chaminda Vaas and Muttiah Muralitharan and to keep the other end quiet with the back up support of Upul Chandana. In fact Chandana also played a leading role in polishing off the tail with splendid figures of 2 for 23.

Meanwhile man of the match Chaminda Vaas was delighted with his return to form where he delivered a real hostile spell of bowling claiming three wickets for 15 runs from 9.1 overs.

The left arm paceman said that his experience by playing in the country championships has helped him a lot to produce this kind of results.

Vaas said that the wicket of Marcus Trescothick was the one that he cherished most even though the dismissal of all rounder Andrew Flintoff did make a big impact on the game.
