Professor S. Rupasinghe The University community announces the passing away of Senior Professor Siripala Rupasinghe, Faculty of Education, and University of Colombo after a brief illness. The Faculty of Education mourns the loss of one of its most eminent professors who has been a colossus in his area of specialization, Comparative Education, and an indefatigable researcher of repute. Most of all, he was a much loved university teacher who devoted his entire university career of nearly 40 years to guide generations of students, both undergraduate and postgraduate, states the Faculty of Education in a press release. Professor Rupasinghe served two terms of office as Dean of the Faculty of Education (1990-1996) and his period of Headship of the Department of Social Science Education spans over 15 years, since his first assumption of duties as Head in 1982. He was a long-standing member of the Senate of the University of Colombo and, was a member of the university Council during his period of office as Dean. His university career began in Peradeniya in 1974 when he first assumed duties as a lecturer in the Department of Education, University of Peradeniya. Prior to this he served as a lecturer in the Teachers' College, Bolawalana (1970-1974) and, as an assistant teacher in government schools, including Minuwangoda Central College (1965-1969). Professor Rupasinghe entered the University of Ceylon, Peradeniya in 1960 from Ananda College, Colombo, and passed out with Upper Second Division honours, having specialized in Geography. In 1972 he won the Manjeri Khan Gold Medal and a Distinction pass in the Post Graduate Diploma in Education, from the Dept. of Education, University of Peradeniya. He obtained the Master of Philosophy degree in 1979 from the University of Colombo. He was promoted to the grade of Associate Professor in 1991, appointed to the chair of Social Science Education in 1995 and, was promoted as Senior Professor in 2002. Professor Rupasinghe comes from an ancestral family from Veediyawatta, Minuwangoda, and his parents were themselves principals of schools. He leaves behind his wife, Anula de Silva, veteran journalist and author, a daughter and son. His untimely demise is an irreparable loss to his family as well as to the nation. The cortege will leave his residence Block 17/8, Mattakkuliya Housing Scheme, Crow Island, Colombo 15 on 20th Thursday at 12.00 noon and will be brought to the New Building, Faculty of Education (entrance from Bauddhaloka Mawatha) for colleagues, students and the public to pay their respect. At 3.30 p.m the funeral procession will leave from the Faculty of Education for the Kanatta cemetery for cremation at 4.00 p.m. |
