Chief of Staff retires Chief of Staff of the Army, Major General L. C. R. Goonewardene retires from the Sri Lanka Army tomorrow. November 21 after 35 years of valuable service to the country. A farewell will be held at Army Headquarters tomorrow evening (21) for the outgoing General. An old boy of St. Thomas' College, Mt Lavinia, Major General Goonewardene joined the Sri Lanka Army as an officer cadet of Intake 2 in 1969. He was attached to the Sri Lanka 4th Artillery Regiment after being commissioned as a second Lieutenant. During the span of 35 years of service, he held several key appointments such as Director Operations at Army Head Quarters, GOC 54 and 11 Division, SF Commander Jaffna, Colonel Commandant Sri Lanka Artillery, and Quarter Master General AHQ. He took over as the Chief of Staff on 13. April 2002. He was appointed the Acting Army Commander during the period that Army Commander Lt. Gen. Lionel Balagalle was away from the country recently. Among the overseas training he received were Senior Command Course in India, ICRC Course in Italy/Switzerland, National Defence College India, and Crisis Management Course in USA. He was also awarded with Ranasura and Uttama Seva Padakkama for his unblemished services. |
